Must Read List
Olympos Dan Simmons
Sequel to Simmons’s Ilium, set in a future where the events of The Iliad have been played out for real on Mars - only now things are veering off course. Observer of the Trojan War Hockenberry and Helen of Troy have fallen in love, while Achilles and Hector have vowed to kill the Gods themselves…
Nylon Angel Marianne de Pierres
Cyberpunk novel set in a future Australia. We don’t get that many novels set in Oz, so it could be interesting. Being made into an RPG soon too.
Cusp Robert A. Metzger
Metzger’s usually pretty good, and this looks interesting; a solar flare devastates Earth, bringing about a new social order - and the supercomputer CUSP, designed to run on the human mind.
Rainbow’s End Vernor Vinge
Vinge doesn’t publish all that often, so it’s always worth a look when he’s got a new book out. Another Singularity novel (ala-Stross), but set in a more accessible timeframe - just 20 years in the future, as the Terror War rages. Interesting.
Red Thunder/Red Lightning John Varley
I’ve never read Varley, so I’m curious about these… supposedly space opera, but relating back to current events as well - Red Thunder was written during the 2004 tsunami, and hurricane Katrina.
I, Alien Edited by Mike Resnick
Short story collection focusing on alien encounters told from the alien perspective. Works by authors including Robert J. Sawyer, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Harry Turtledove and Josepha Sherman.
