Sandi Thom
I hadn’t really heard of Sandi Thom until a couple of weeks ago; I remember hearing about her webcasting a “tour” from her basement in London to 100,000 people, but didn’t pay much attention. I wish I had now! I heard her single I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair) a little while ago, and I just can’t get it out of my head now.
It’s a great song and I love her voice, but what I find really striking about it are the lyrics. I don’t think I’ve heard songwriting like that for a long time; reminded me a bit of Stevie Nicks, beautiful, angry lyrics. Her album’s just been released here now, so I’ll definitely look into that. What’s really interesting is the wave of new artists coming through from England, though. Sandi Thom, Lily Allen, David Ford… they’re all so different to what’s being played right now. It’s a real breath of fresh air.
