A Writer’s Life

There’s been a bit of a shakeup at Wimbledon this year: women will earn the same prize money as men for the first time, Hawk-Eye is being introduced, and a roof is (finally) being built. All good changes, but to balance it here are 5 things that I think will never change.

3) Rain will always frustrate players and fans

2) Strawberries and cream will always be spectator favourites (62,000 pounds of strawberries and 1,540 gallons of cream are sold each year)

1) And Sir Cliff Richard will always perform during the rain (and shortly thereafter, the suicide rate in Britain will spike upward )

I’m not quite sure what it is about Twitter, but I’m hooked. Unlike IMs and other programs, I’m not that interested in updating my own profile on Twitter; rather I’ve been enjoying seeing what other people are saying.

It’s addictive. and almost a kind of voyeurism; it’s like you’re peering into someone else’s thoughts, into their world. But it’s also strangely compelling. If you watch Twittervision for 10 minutes, you get this idea of a global community: thousands of people all online at the same time, speaking in different languages, all about the same thing. It’s hard to describe, but it’s fascinating.

Well, it’s been awhile since I’ve updated this blog… I do have a good reason, though. Been busy finishing Shards of Babylon (almost there now… though I said that last year!). And I’ve also been busy starting a new writers group in Bondi Junction; a lot of work getting things started, but should be fun once it’s going.

Anyway, now that I’m back I’ve decided I’m going to make a few changes to the blog. I’m going to update CJWriter at least twice a week from now on, but in doing so I’ll be closing The SF Blog. For a long time I’ve wanted to keep the two blogs separate, but I’ve realised that there’s really no point; I write SF and it’s one of my interests, so it really belongs here.

So over the coming weeks I’ll be starting to incorporate content from The SF Blog into CJWriter, and all future news and reviews will appear here. I’m still treating CJWriter as a personal column, so there’ll still be thoughts and opinions posted regularly, as well as Fives lists; this should just give me a bit more to write about.

I’ll be starting with reviews of Geoff Ryman’s Air and Vernor Vinge’s Rainbows End in a few days. So hope to see you then!
