Too Much (But Never Enough)
CJ Levinson

I walked across a sunburnt land
Tried to define myself amongst the sand
But all I found was a memory
Of something I’d tried to leave behind
You smiled at me from across the room
And I don’t know why I waste my time
Dreaming of something that can never be
Something that can never be

And I don’t know why I feel so shy
Because when I open my eyes, you’re standing right there
And I don’t know why I feel so high
Because when I open my eyes, the magic’s not there
It’s too much but never enough (too much but never enough)

I looked across the desolate land
Imagined the world in the palm of my hand
A voice on the wind called your name
But I was frozen at the wrong time to hear
We were like strangers falling in love
And I don’t know why I keep coming back for more
When you don’t even know who I am
No, you don’t know who I am

And I don’t know why I feel so shy
Because when I open my eyes, you’re standing right there
And I don’t know why I feel so high
Because when I open my eyes, the magic’s not there
It’s too much but never enough (too much but never enough)

Now we’re back where we belong
You with your promises, me on my knees
Begging forgiveness for something I don’t understand
It’s why I learnt to crawl before I walked

[Instrumental]

And I don’t know why I feel so shy
Because when I open my eyes, you’re standing right there
And I don’t know why I feel so high
Because when I open my eyes, the magic’s not there
It’s too much but never enough (too much but never enough)

Yes, it’s too much but never enough
Too much but never enough
Too much but never enough

    I love it. :)
CJ: Thanks, TT. Took me ages to get it just right, so I’m glad you like it. Next stop - a recording studio! ;)

I like it. Now, put it to music so we can really get the feel for how it should sound. :-)
All I can manage to write are parodies. Even those are incomplete. My short fiction is extremely short, such as the “What planet are you from?” quiz in my blog. *sigh*

CJ: Thanks for the feedback! I’d actually love to put it to music, but I have no musical sense myself, so I’m not sure how it should sound. Probably a cross between Snow Patrol and Portishead… now there’s an eclectic mix. :)
I hesitate calling these songs, really; because I’m just writing lyrics, it’s more like poetry. And my poetry is more like prose. Weird. But for every one of these I finish, there are 10 which will never see the light of day… it’s more about the process that the result. Maybe looking at it that way helps. ;)

I love a good Best Of list. There’s nothing more fun than reading through a list of the best novels or films of all time and then debating the order with a friend. Over the years there have been quite a few of these Best Novels lists, most notably Modern Library’s list in 1998 which [...]
